Who We Are
First Baptist Church of Woodbridge - A Legacy of Faith, A Future of Hope
When we think of God’s goodness and all He has done for us, our hearts cry out in gratitude. First Baptist Church of Woodbridge, New Jersey, stands today as a living testimony of God’s grace, faithfulness, and divine provision.
Our story began in 1909, when a small group of Black families began gathering for Bible study in each other’s homes. Under the guidance of the Harris brothers, they established what would become the first Black church in Woodbridge. Despite the challenges of the Great Depression and the harsh realities of racism, their faith endured—and they laid the first cornerstone of our church that same year.
Throughout the decades, our church has been shaped by a lineage of dedicated pastors and a growing, resilient congregation. From Reverend Kirby in 1947, who brought structure and music ministry, to Reverend Latimore’s 17 years of faithful service, and Reverend Hughes, who helped modernize our building with stained glass and climate control—we have always moved forward, even in seasons of uncertainty.
In 1985, Pastor Lawson was called to lead during a revival service. Though he was sent temporarily, we knew God had sent him permanently. Under his leadership, we gained not only a constitution, financial stability, and active ministries, but also a vision far greater than our walls on Neilson Street could contain. That vision led us to our current home—a former school building transformed into a sanctuary through faith, perseverance, and community unity.
Despite opposition, prejudice, and setbacks—including vandalism and tire-slashing during renovations—our church family stood firm. In December 1999, we held our first service in this new space. By God’s grace, we burned the mortgage on December 8, 2019, declaring our freedom from debt and dedication to ministry.
Even through the COVID-19 pandemic, when we were forced to pause in-person worship, we returned in June 2021—stronger, more united, and filled with renewed purpose. Ministries have come back to life. Our youth are thriving. Our elders remain rooted in faith. From missionaries to dancers, to Deacon Bailey’s famous grits—we are a family.
In 2024, we celebrated a historic and Sprit-led milestone: the installation of our first woman pastor, Assistant Pastor Dawn Stuart. Her appointment marks a new chapter in our church's legacy- one that reflects our continued growth, inclusivity, and obedience to God's calling on all people. Pastor Stuart brings a powerful anointing, a heart for service, and a passion for preaching and teaching the Word of God. We are honored to walk in faith with her leadership as part of the First Baptist Family.
We’ve licensed six evangelists, welcomed new ministers, and embraced a future full of weddings, home goings, praise, and powerful worship. And while we celebrate our past, we are far from done.
First Baptist Church is not just a church with history—it is a church with purpose.
